An overview of what the fishing is like on the lower
Laguna Madre (Port Isabel)
February is the time for huge trout on the westside
of the bay from look-out point north untill you run out of water,
and you can find great numbers of school size trout along the drop
offs of the ICW and its side channels to the west. All this is possible
when the wind allows . If it's really windy and the water is chocolate
brown, try drift fishing for reds with shrimp under a cork southeast
of the gas well flats. If the water has a slight green tinge try
a red head worm. Working south, and when the weather permits, sheepshead
and mangroves are thick under the bridges which is great for the
kids. One may also make the run down the Brownsville ship channel
(yes it's legal, just don't tie up to any structure) and hookup with
some snook. My most productive method is free shrimping with large
shrimp, under the docks etc however, on the way there, which is about
a 15 mile run, try a larger silver super spook along the rip-rap.
