2 - 44Hr Middle Grounds Report - Capt. Rich had mentioned in his
mid-trip report that the weather was beautiful; it remained the same
for the rest of the weekend. The Superstar set out on Friday at 4pm
and got to the Middle Grounds by 8:30pm when everyone started fishing.
He reports that it was a slow start; they saw some
Vermillion Snapper, Mangrove Snapper and some assorted small Grouper.
Around 4am things changed and the Snappers started biting really
well. After daybreak they moved further offshore in search of big
grouper. The grouper bite has been slow lately, so Capt. Rich was
bound and determined to find some trophy grouper and decided to run
another 20 miles offshore. They were rewarded with 6 Gags over 30lbs.,
one over 40lbs. and a bunch in the teens.
They also fished a deepwater
wreck and caught a bunch of Amberjacks. That afternoon they moved
back to the Middle Grounds and until sunset the fishing was extremely
slow. The moment the sun set the fish turned on! The Vermillion and
Mangrove Snapper bite was insane!!! Many people caught their limit
and went to bed. In the middle of the snapper bite they did manage
a few more Gag Grouper under 10lbs., a massive 37lb Kingfish & a nice cobia.
With the water temp still cool we can hardly wait to see how fishing
will be when the temp is right!
Stanley Tinter, of Marco Island,
FL took the Grouper jackpot with a 43lb. Gag. The second place Grouper
was won by Scooter Robinson, who caught a 35lb Gag; the biggest he
has ever landed! The fish pulled so hard it wore out the breaks on
his wheelchair!! Tony "No-Fish" Muia won the Amberjack
jackpot. Ron Bowerman from Northport, FL took the snapper pool w/
an 8.7 mangrove snapper.
